Basic introduction to Vietnamese cinnamon sticks

This is a product that may be unfamiliar to many traders. It is remembered for its unique aroma and flavor, as well as its physical appearance.

Defining Vietnamese cinnamon sticks

Vietnamese cinnamon sticks are the final products of processing the cinnamon inner bark, specifically from a plant known as Cinnamomum loureiroi – or Vietnamese cassia. The harvesting process starts after a rainy season since the inner bark will easily peel off. Farmers remove the rough outer layer and cut the softer inner bark into smaller parts. These pieces are from 3 to 3.7 centimeters in width and 15-20 or 30-40 centimeters in length. These indexes ensure that when drying, the barks will curl into the perfect stick shape.

The origin of Vietnamese cinnamon sticks

Vietnamese cinnamon sticks are mostly harvested and processed in the Central and Northern provinces of Vietnam, including Quang Ninh, Yen Bai, and Quang Ngai, Quang Nam. They have the ideal humid, tropical weather and moist, well-drained soil for cinnamon plants to grow.

Origin of Vietnamese cinnamon sticks

The cinnamon factory of K-Agriculture is placed in Hong Phong village, Mau A town, Van Yen district, Yen Bai province. It can generate up to 5 tons of high-quality cinnamon every day. It is located near cinnamon plantations, each hectare can produce up to 17 tons of cinnamon bark.

Features of Vietnamese cinnamon sticks

Vietnamese cinnamon sticks have several differences compared to Indonesian and Chinese ones, most notably in their color and flavor.

  • The aroma and taste of Vietnamese cinnamon sticks

This product has a strong, intense, and hot cinnamon flavor. The texture is thick and feels grainy. Therefore, when curling, Vietnamese cinnamon sticks form a few thick layers of barks. These features, to many consumers, are preferable and hence the reasons they choose Vietnamese cinnamon over products from other countries.

As Vietnamese cinnamon sticks are a Cassia product, it is also much more easily found on the market at an affordable price. This can be explained by their abundant supply and high production capacity, which is attributed to the highly standardized manufacturing process with modern machines and skillful farmers.

  • The appearance of Vietnamese cinnamon sticks

To ensure they can be sold at the best price, Vietnamese cinnamon sticks should be intact and not broken, forming a well-rounded stick shape.

  • Moisture

The required moisture index for these cinnamon sticks is 12%. However, in reality, the figure is from 13% to 13.5%. In this range, the product will be safe from fungus and its quality will not be damaged when stored.

  • Length and thickness

The length of Vietnamese cinnamon sticks is from 15 to 20 centimeters, or 30 to 40 centimeters, and from 2 to 3 millimeters in thickness, based on specific requests of the clients. These measurements must be consistent so that the product looks presentable and appealing on the shelf.

Traders who deal with Vietnamese cinnamon sticks will enjoy the following benefits and, thus, have a better chance of success.

  • Growing demand in various large consumer markets

A report in 2019 of OEC indicated that the export value for Vietnamese cinnamon in bulk products stood at $175M, a three-fold increase in comparison with its value in 2015. Apparently, this is a major development, which proves that consumers around the world are increasingly opting for Vietnamese cinnamon sticks.

  • Enormous production output

According to data from FAOSTAT, Vietnam produced more than 31,000 tonnes of cinnamon products, including Vietnamese cinnamon sticks, in 2020. It ranked as the third-largest producer, following Indonesia and China.

The area for growing cinnamon in Vietnam is rapidly growing, at around 200,000 hectares, distributed mainly in Yen Bai, Quang Ninh, Lang Son, and Quang Nam. Vietnam’s rich, well-drained soil and its humid tropical weather are ideal for cinnamon trees to grow healthily.

  • Vietnamese cinnamon sticks are different from Indonesian and Chinese products

Vietnamese cinnamon sticks have a higher essential oil percentage than Indonesian and Chinese ones, possibly up to 6%. As a result, their flavor is also significantly stronger and more intense but does not taste bitter like Chinese cinnamon.

  • Various practical applications

Vietnamese cinnamon sticks are common in both cooking and healthcare. In many cuisines and cultures, they are added to a wide variety of drinks and foods. These cinnamon sticks introduce a warm and spicy cinnamon taste to tea, curries, stews, and soups, hence complimenting their flavor.

Additionally, Vietnamese cinnamon sticks bring about many beneficial effects to our health. They are highly recommended for diabetic patients due to their ability to lower and stabilize blood sugar levels. Besides, they improve our oral health, relieve stomaches and headaches, as well as improving appetite. People with cardiovascular problems are advised to consume this product, too.

  • Support from the Vietnamese government

Many governmental bodies, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade, valued the importance of exporting Vietnamese spices and agricultural products, including Vietnamese cinnamon sticks.
